Philippians 3 Sermon: Pressing On to the Goal

In Philippians 3, the apostle Paul exhorts believers to focus their lives on pressing toward the goal of perfection in Christ. This sermon explores Paul's exhortation, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, humility, and dependence on God's grace in our pursuit of spiritual growth.

Overcoming Obstacles

Paul acknowledges the challenges we face in our spiritual journey, including temptations, distractions, and opposition from the world. Humility and Submission

Paul reminds us that our efforts to grow spiritually are insufficient without God's grace. He writes, "It is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure" (v. 13). We cannot rely solely on our own strength or willpower; we need to depend on God's power and guidance to transform our lives. By surrendering our lives to Christ, we receive the grace and strength we need to press on toward our goal.

Focus on the Goal

Paul exhorts us to "keep our eyes on the prize" (v. 14). The goal he refers to is not earthly success or material possessions but spiritual perfection in Christ. This involves becoming more like Christ in our character, conduct, and motivations. By focusing on this ultimate goal, we gain a proper perspective on the challenges and distractions we encounter along the way.

Pressing On in Unity

Paul also stresses the importance of unity among believers in our pursuit of spiritual growth. He says, "Let us live in harmony with one another" (v. 16). When we work together in love and unity, we support and encourage each other to press on towards our goal. Division and conflict hinder our spiritual progress and weaken our witness to the world.

Paul's exhortation in Philippians 3 challenges us to press on towards spiritual perfection in Christ. By overcoming obstacles through perseverance, cultivating humility and submission, and depending on God's grace, we can focus our lives on the ultimate goal of becoming more like Christ.
