Colossians 3:12-15: A Call to Christian Character

Colossians 3:12-15 is a powerful passage that outlines the characteristics of a true Christian. It encourages believers to let the qualities of Christ permeate their hearts and actions.

Garments of God's Chosen

"Put on therefore, as God's chosen, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering." (Colossians 3:12)

As God's chosen, we are called to be a reflection of His character. This involves cultivating virtues that embody His nature:

  • Bowels of mercies: Deep compassion and empathy for others
  • Kindness: Acts of love, generosity, and support
  • Humbleness of mind: A recognition of our own limitations and God's sovereignty
  • Meekness: A gentle and submissive spirit
  • Longsuffering: Patience and endurance in the face of adversity

Unity in the Body of Christ

"Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye." (Colossians 3:13)

The unity of the church is essential. Despite our differences, we are called to:

  • Bear with one another: Tolerate and accept each other's flaws and weaknesses
  • Forgive one another: Extend grace and release resentment, just as Christ has forgiven us

The Bond of Love

"And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness." (Colossians 3:14)

Love is the greatest commandment and the foundation of Christian character. It binds us together and creates unity within the body of Christ. Love should:

  • Abound: Increase and overflow in our hearts and actions
  • Rule: Govern our thoughts, words, and deeds
  • Be perfect: Complete and lacking in flaws

The Peace of Christ

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful." (Colossians 3:15)

Inner peace is a gift from God. It guards our hearts and minds from anxiety and turmoil. We are called to:

  • Let God's peace rule: Submit our hearts to the guidance of the Holy Spirit
  • Be thankful: Express gratitude for the blessings and peace that God provides
